Instead of strengthening, the yen weakened after the decision, partly because two policymakers opposed the hike and markets saw the move as less aggressive than some had expected. That distinction matters. A rate hike does not automatically mean tighter financial conditions everywhere overnight. The pace of future increases, inflation, oil prices and the yen’s response may matter more than this single decision.
