Recently, negotiations between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland over a security agreement have become a focal point in Arctic geopolitics. Trump publicly claims that the U.S. has reached a related security agreement with Denmark and Greenland, and that the U.S. will obtain permanent control over Greenland’s security affairs, while emphasizing that the U.S. will not pay a single cent for it.


The proposed indefinite agreement suggests that, without U.S. permission, other countries may not conduct military deployments or make sensitive investments locally. The U.S. also plans to expand its military presence on the island. However, Denmark and Greenland’s local government state that the agreement will respect the integrity of Denmark’s sovereign territory and the local people’s right to self-determination. The agreement also needs to be reviewed by the parliament before it can be formally implemented. There are clear differences in the parties’ external statements.
