Romanée-Conti has been all the rage these past few days. I don’t know much about red wine, so I’ll talk about baijiu instead. I’ve been drinking it for over ten years and have bought fakes three times: fake Moutai twice and fake Wuliangye once. To avoid ending up in an awkward situation like the recent Romanée-Conti fiasco (deliberately buying fakes is another matter), there are two things to watch out for: where you buy it and the price. Buy through official, reputable channels. In particular, don’t blindly trust friends—even if you’re close and trust them, you can’t rule out the possibility that they’ve been scammed. Second, prices are very transparent nowadays. Anything far below or even a little above the market price is a no-go. A low price basically means it’s 100% fake.
