The labor market isn’t weak enough to force an aggressive easing response, while producer inflation is showing that price pressures haven’t disappeared. And with oil above $100 and Treasury yields elevated, the inflation side of the equation deserves more attention. The real test comes next: August CPI on September 11. If inflation stays firm while employment remains relatively resilient, the “Fed must cut” narrative becomes much harder to defend.
