THIS IS INSANE. 🤯

$38 million were drained from 500 Bitcoin wallets in 25 minutes. The attacker never touched a single device.

Here's what actually happened:

Coldcard, one of the most trusted hardware wallets in Bitcoin, shipped a firmware bug in March 2021. Devices running versions 4.0.1 through 5.0.3 were skipping their own hardware randomness generator during seed creation. That means the "random" 24-word phrase protecting your life savings wasn't fully random at all.

594.48 BTC swept from around 500 wallets, all inside a 25-minute window, spanning three Bitcoin blocks. 1,324 separate transaction outputs moved in a single coordinated sweep. 562 BTC already sitting consolidated in one address.

Coinkite, the company behind Coldcard, is now warning every Mk3 owner directly: move your coins immediately if you don't have a passphrase.

Here's the part that should actually scare you. This code was open source. Public. Anyone could have checked it. That's supposed to be the whole safety argument for hardware wallets, "don't trust, verify." The bug sat there for five years anyway.

Coinkite is being careful, they haven't officially confirmed the firmware bug is what caused this exact theft. But the fix doesn't wait for certainty.
