Why is oil worth trading in a range?—A confession of a swing strategy
Oil (WTI) has something a bit different from other assets: for most of the time, it chops around within a certain price band, and days when it truly runs in a single direction are in the minority. Geopolitical conflicts, inventory data, OPEC production cuts—these drive it to break out. But once the news is out, the price often returns to the familiar box it’s been trading in.
That’s how the logic of “buy low and sell high” came about: when it drops near the lower edge of the range, you go long; when it rises near the upper edge, you short. Then you wait for it to bounce back and profit from the swing. You don’t chase breakouts or fight the trend—you place bets only at the edges of the range, wagering on the high-probability event of “mean reversion.”
