Bitfinex’s leveraged ETH longs have piled up to 368,000 ETH—the highest level since August 2022—yet ETH is still hovering around $2,400. I’m not chasing it.
Public Bitfinex data: ETH long positions were around 94,000 ETH on October 1, and had reached about 368,000 ETH by 4 p.m. today, nearly four times as much. Hyperliquid on-chain data: Maji’s 3,400 ETH long was liquidated at around 5 a.m. this morning, for a loss of about $197,000.
He then opened another 1,455 ETH long with 25x leverage, with a liquidation price around $2,377.7—just over 1% below the current price of about $2,410. The more crowded the longs get, the more the downside looks like a row of stop-losses waiting to be swept. When the price can’t push higher but leverage keeps rising, a sharp wick seems more likely to come first than a breakout.
I’m watching today’s low of $2,356: a break below it would signal that leveraged longs are starting to get cleared out, with this week’s low of $2,318 as the next level to watch. A daily close back above the October 16 high of $2,494 would mean these longs got it right, and my cautious view would be invalidated.
I mainly track how news plays out and what would invalidate my view. Follow if you’re interested. Do you think ETH will first break below $2,350 and sweep out leveraged longs, or get above $2,500 first?
