Elon Musk withdrew the lawsuit he filed against artificial intelligence company OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, claiming that the company was motivated by profit rather than serving humanity.
Legal Process and Withdrawal of the Case
On June 11 in San Francisco Superior Court, Musk's lawyers filed a motion to dismiss the breach of contract lawsuit.
The decision to dismiss the lawsuit means Musk could sue again in the future; because this decision does not mean that the case is permanently rejected.
The filing was filed a day before a federal judge is set to decide whether to dismiss the case or allow it to proceed, according to earlier court records.
Musk declined to comment on his decision to drop the lawsuit.
Initial Complaints and Allegations
Musk filed a breach of contract lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman on February 29, 2024, claiming that the company, creator of ChatGPT, had deviated from its goal of building large language models "not for profit, for the benefit of humanity."
Their complaints focused specifically on OpenAI's partnerships with large companies like Microsoft and its decision to offer ChatGPT-4 under a closed-source approach.
Musk had demanded that OpenAI return to its open source values and sought an injunction to stop the artificial general intelligence software from being used for profit.
Musk also noted accusations of unfair trade practices and breach of trust against OpenAI.
Continuing Concerns and Competitive Entities
The billionaire's latest concern regarding OpenAI is the collaboration with Apple, where ChatGPT will be integrated into Mac, iPad and iPhone operating systems.
Musk argues that Apple's choice is an "unacceptable security breach" against Apple users; because it delegates privacy and security to a third party like OpenAI.
However, Apple claims that OpenAI will not store data requests and user IP addresses will remain private.
