The artificial intelligence company has terminated accounts linked to several suspected covert foreign influence operations.
Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has revealed that it has identified and blocked multiple online campaigns using its technology to manipulate global opinion.
On May 30, OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Sam Altman, said it had “terminated accounts associated with covert influence operations.”
“In the last three months, we’ve disrupted five covert IO [influence operations] that were trying to use our models to support deception campaigns on the internet.”
Bad actors have used AI to generate comments for articles, create names and bios for social media accounts, and translate and proofread text. One operation called “Spamouflage” used OpenAI to study social media and generate multilingual content on platforms like X, Medium, and Blogspot in an attempt to “manipulate public opinion or influence political outcomes,” the company behind ChatGPT said.
It also uses artificial intelligence to debug code and manage databases and websites.
Additionally, an operation called “Bad Grammar” targeted Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltic states, and the United States, using OpenAI models to run Telegram bots and generate political commentary.
Another group called Doppelganger used AI models to generate comments in English, French, German, Italian, and Polish and posted them on X and 9GAG, also with the goal of manipulating public opinion.
