📰 Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, donated 30 ETH (approximately $113,000) to support the legal defense of Tornado Cash developers Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm, through the decentralized fundraising platform Juicebox.
This gesture is not surprising, as Buterin has consistently advocated for privacy tools to manage crypto assets privately. Furthermore, it is not the first time that he has made a similar donation, in 2022 he donated 10 ETH to a legal fund in Juicebox to support the Australian activist and founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange.
Tornado Cash is a privacy-focused tool that facilitates anonymous cryptocurrency transactions. However, its potential for misuse has led to its exploitation by criminals, which attracted the attention of authorities and led the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to impose sanctions on Tornado Cash in August 2022.
