People around the world are scanning their retinas in exchange for a digital ID and the promise of free cryptocurrency from the #Worldcoin (WLD) project, defying concerns from privacy advocates and data regulators, Reuters reports.
The greatest excitement is observed in the UK, Japan and India. In Tokyo, a long queue has already formed for scanning the iris of the eye in order to receive 25 WLD ($56).
Founded by Sam Altman (CEO of ChatGPT developer OpenAI), Worldcoin says its goal is to create a new digital identity that will allow users to prove online that they are people and not bots.
