Two mysterious Bitcoin (BTC) wallets holding a total of 1,000 Bitcoins — worth $61 million at current prices — have suddenly become active after a 10-year hiatus, transferring nearly all the satoshis.
Wallet address “16vRq…qjzEa” is 843,131 at 19:10 UTC on May 12. He transferred 500 Bitcoins in the block. The other 500 Bitcoins were sent two blocks later by the address “1DUJuH…NgfC5”.
These wallets received Bitcoin in 2013, at a time when Bitcoin was $134, each receiving 500 Bitcoins. At current prices, the total amount transferred is worth 456 times the acquisition prices, i.e. $61.2 million.
Since the transfers, a recipient address from address “16vRq…qjzEa” has already transferred 500 Bitcoins to other addresses, while a recipient address from “1DUJuH…NgfC5” still holds its 500 Bitcoins.
The closeness of the transfers led blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain to combine the two transactions, leading trackers to believe the two wallets belonged to the same person or organization.
Before transfers, the two addresses were equally Bitcoin whales' 4,353. it was the biggest.
Less than a week ago, a Satoshi Nakamoto-era Bitcoin wallet transferred 687 Bitcoins worth $43.9 million to two separate addresses.
These wallets, excluding Nakamoto's wallet, contain approximately $121 billion worth of Bitcoin, according to Fortune.
While the reason these wallets woke up is often speculated to be the sale of Bitcoin at an opportune time, others suggest the funds may have been transferred to a different address under a more secure noncustodial wallet service provider.
Bitcoin is currently trading at $61,450 and is up 130% in the last 12 months.
