According to the latest data from Arkham, the five largest cryptocurrency “whales” with known wallet addresses together own digital assets worth approximately $3.5 billion. Among them are Justin Sun from TRON, Rain Löhmus from LHV Bank, Vitalik Buterin from Ethereum, former CTO of Ripple Stefan Thomas and cryptocurrency venture capitalist James Fickel.
However, much of this wealth is currently inaccessible. Löhmus and Thomas are unable to access their large assets due to the loss of passwords to their digital wallets. Their assets are estimated at approximately $793 million and $452 million, respectively. This is about 35% or $1.24 billion of the total assets of the five largest whales.
Löhmus, for example, allegedly lost his private keys, leaving him without access to funds. He even admitted to owning a wallet containing 250,000 ETH, an amount he earned during an ICO in 2014, but made no effort to recover it.
Former Ripple executive Thomas received 7,002 BTC in 2011 as payment for making an educational video about Bitcoin, but later lost access to the funds after forgetting the password to an encrypted IronKey hard drive containing the private keys.
