Google is considering adding premium features powered by GenAI to its search engine. This marks the first time a Google product will be behind a paywall. However, the free search experience supported by ads will still be available.
According to a Financial Times report on April 3, the tech giant is looking at various options, including adding AI-powered search features to its premium subscription services. These services already provide access to the new Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and Docs.
However, these subscriptions do not currently improve the search experience. Google's main product, Google Search, has been free since the early 2000s. However, the tech giant may be exploring different methods of making money.
Google's traditional search engine will remain free and ads will continue to appear next to search results, even for subscribers, the report said.
