Law enforcement agencies in South Korea have revealed that hackers from North Korea have been impersonating South Korean government agencies and journalists to steal cryptocurrencies. It is reported that the hackers use email phishing techniques to carry out suspicious activities on unsuspecting victims.
The South Korean National Police Agency stated that North Korean hackers seem to have targeted people's encrypted assets. These thieves stole information from nearly 1,500 victims between March and October 2023, most of whom were from the private sector, and about 57 were retired or current government officials. The attackers impersonated officials from the National Health Insurance, the National Pension Bureau, the South Korean National Police Agency, and the National Tax Service, sending phishing emails with clickable baits to recipients. If victims open the phishing email or click on the attachment file, their computers will be infected with malware, allowing hackers to steal personal data and information.
