What is Bitcoin Halving?

The Bitcoin network issues new bitcoins every 10 minutes. During the first four years of Bitcoin's existence, the number of new bitcoins issued every 10 minutes was 50. Every four years, this number is halved. The day when the amount is reduced by half is called “halving”.

What is the meaning of Bitcoin Halving?

Halving decreases the amount of new bitcoins generated per block. This means that the supply of new bitcoins is lower, which makes the purchase more expensive.

In normal markets, lower supply with constant demand usually leads to higher prices. Since the halving reduces the supply of new bitcoins, and demand generally remains stable, the halving has generally preceded some of the biggest Bitcoin runs.

In the image below, the vertical blue lines indicate the three previous halves (2012-11-28, 2016-7-9, and 2020-5-11). Notice how the price has risen significantly after each halving.

Bitcoin Halving Chart

In the image below, you can see the inflation rate of Bitcoin during each period.

Each halving reduces the inflation rate of Bitcoin. The orange line is the inflation rate of Bitcoin over a given period, while the blue line is the total number of bitcoins issued.

Calendario del Halving de Bitcoin

The Bitcoin halving is scheduled by block height, not date. Halvings occur every 210,000 blocks. The 2024 halving will occur in block 840,000.

What happens to miners during the halving?

Many always speculate that the miners will close after the halving. The reality is that most miners are very smart and value halvings, so they don't end up shutting down any miner.

When is the 2024 Bitcoin halving?

The 2024 halving is likely to occur between February 2024 and June 2024.
