Summary Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) are the most popular consensus mechanisms and are used by major cryptocurrencies to secure the network. Bitcoin uses proof of work to verify transactions and secure the network. Among other things, the Work Manual prevents double spending. The blockchain chain is maintained by participants known as miners, who use computing power to compete for the right to confirm new blocks and update the blockchain. The successful miner receives a reward in Bitcoins given to him by the network. As of December 2021, a miner can earn a block reward of up to 6.25 BTC plus transaction fees by successfully mining a block of Bitcoin.
