[South Korea vows to “take action” if WorldCoin violations are confirmed]

South Korea is investigating Sam Altman’s Worldcoin after complaints that the project used unconventional means to collect user data.

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission began the investigation on February 29 to find out whether Worldcoin violated the Personal Information Protection Act. The committee said that if violations are discovered, necessary measures will be taken in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

The investigation will focus on Worldcoin’s collection and processing of sensitive information and the overseas transfer of personal information. According to the release, Worldcoin and its related companies collected user facial and iris data at 10 locations in South Korea.

Worldcoin, on the other hand, is trying to shed its dystopian image by redesigning its iris scanning device to look friendlier, similar to Apple products.

Not only South Korea, Kenya also investigated Worldcoin last year and expressed concerns that the project may affect the country’s monetary policy, network security, and exacerbate fraud. Similar investigations into Worldcoin have been launched in the UK, France and Germany.

Despite facing an investigation, the price of Worldcoin’s WLD token has surged by approximately 218% since February, surging from $2.20 to currently $7.
