Sequencers coordinate transactions on layer 2 rollups - Layer 2 rollups can reduce network congestion and lower fees (such as Ethereum). Sequencers can technically censor or reorder certain transactions to gain some benefits before passing these transactions to the layer 1 chain. Therefore, rollups seek decentralized solutions to centralized censorship.
The zkSync Era mainnet crashed a few days ago because of a problem with Sequencers. Their founder Alex believes that decentralization is a long-term solution.
By using a shared sequence controller, rollups are able to maintain high throughput and low latency soft commits while gaining cross-chain composability.
