The Ethereum mainnet Cancun upgrade (Dencun) time has finally been confirmed. It will be upgraded at 21:55 on March 13th, Taiwan time. It is regarded as an important key puzzle to maintain the integrity of the Ethereum ecosystem and is anticipated by many developers.
Cancun upgrade will be officially upgraded on 3/13
Cancun upgrade time confirmed
After a series of tests by developers and testnets, it was finally confirmed in the recent 127th conference call of Ethereum core developers that if there are no problems with the deployment of the Holesky testnet, the upgrade time point of the mainnet will be set at block height 8626176. The upgrade will take place at approximately 21:55 on March 13th, Taiwan time.
This is the latest major update following the Ethereum Shanghai upgrade in April 2023.
Why Cancun Upgrade Is So Important
The focus of the Cancun upgrade is the introduction of proto danksharding to provide blob storage space and reduce the cost of Layer2's data availability (DA) on the Ethereum mainnet.
(DA does not store historical data? Data availability does not equal permanent availability)
The Ethereum Foundation hopes that with this update, L2 projects can stay in the Ethereum ecosystem without choosing other data availability layers, such as Celestia or EigenDA. However, the choice still lies with the Layer2 development team, and recently there have been many emerging projects in the market that are alienated from the foundation, and Ethereum’s ability to control the legitimacy of DA has gradually decreased.
Therefore, the Cancun upgrade has always been considered to have a significant impact on the competitive and cooperative relationship between the existing on-chain infrastructure ecology.

delayed justice
In the face of increasingly fierce competition in the data availability layer, Ethereum's dominance is gradually decreasing. The long-awaited Cancun upgrade carries the expectations of many people, all of whom hope to make the Ethereum ecosystem stronger and more sustainable.
Although it is several months later than expected, it has finally reached the final stage and we look forward to the upcoming upgrade process going as expected.
