The US just moved to cut a top-20 crypto exchange off from its banking system — and the alleged figure is $16 billion.
On November 6, FinCEN issued an order that would bar US financial institutions from sending funds to, or receiving funds from, MEXC Global. Treasury says the venue facilitated at least $16 billion in illicit transactions between May 2021 and May 2026, including nearly $1.5 billion tied to Russian sanctions evasion.
This is not a small offshore shop. As of September 2026, Treasury said MEXC processed more than $1 billion in daily transactions and held about $5 billion in reserves. Size did not buy a pass.
The order takes effect 30 days after it appears in the Federal Register, so this is not an instant freeze. MEXC says it is operating normally, user assets remain secure, and it has started an independent review of its AML and sanctions controls.
My read: weekend traders are watching $BTC hover near $75.9K and $BNB near $696, but this is the more important tape. Extra listings on a mid-tier book are worthless if your off-ramp gets blocked. Compliance is now a trading variable, not a footnote.
Would you still park funds on a smaller venue for more listings, or would you rather sit on a deeper book after this?
