Came across this NYT article over the weekend
Nvidia (NVDA) is caught up in export scrutiny again 😅
Apparently, the Commerce Department approved around 24 Chinese companies to handle H200 chip assembly or procurement
A reporter visited the sites
New Matrix’s registered address was an empty factory building
with wires still hanging from the ceiling
Maginfra’s office was empty too
Shareholders were also alleged to have ties to a fund linked to the Entity List
The list also includes big names like Baidu, BYD, and Tesla Shanghai
Their quotas are pretty large
but reportedly, actual shipments haven’t yet reached the full amount
Trump had previously cleared H200 sales to China
and the US was also set to take around 25%
The chips are still piled up in Hong Kong
and Chinese import approvals are slow too
The AI narrative doesn’t take weekends off
I’ll just note NVDA and the export scrutiny together for now
Not chasing the hype
