Came across this Hong Kong news at noon:
The SFC is tightening the rules around names again 😅
The consultation has wrapped up
and they’re preparing to amend two ordinances.
Unlicensed firms won’t be able to casually use
combined terms like “crypto exchange” or
“virtual asset trading platform.”
Using “crypto” on its own may not necessarily count,
but pair it with “exchange,” “trading platform,” or “clearing house,”
and people could easily think the firm is licensed.
That line needs to be clearly drawn.
It still has to pass the Legislative Council,
then there’ll be a six-month grace period.
It doesn’t take effect tonight.
Hong Kong’s approach
is starting to look more and more like nailing the doorframe shut first,
then discussing who gets to come in.
I’ll just make a note of it for now—no rush to read it as bullish or bearish.
