Moody’s says President Trump’s June 22 quantum executive orders have moved the federal post-quantum migration target to 2030–31 from 2035 — four years earlier — putting $BTC and the wider digital-asset industry under new pressure.

The two orders make quantum computing a strategic national priority. One calls for a quantum computer “powerful enough to initiate the era of quantum-enabled scientific discovery,” with system specifications due within 90 days; the other speeds federal adoption of post-quantum cryptography.

In a June 24 sector comment, Moody’s warned that Bitcoin’s public-key cryptography secures ownership and transactions. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could break the elliptic-curve signatures guarding private keys, and compromised keys “may lead to immediate and irreversible on-chain outcomes.”

The near-term danger is not a working quantum machine but “harvest now, later”: adversaries capture encrypted data today for a future “Q-Day.” Dormant wallets and reused addresses with exposed public keys are standing targets, and Satoshi-era coins in early pay-to-public-key outputs are among the most exposed.

The fix exists in proposed quantum-resistant signature schemes, but Bitcoin adoption needs consensus, soft forks and coordinated wallet migration. That is the harder problem.

What it means for you: if you hold $BTC in dormant wallets or reused addresses, exposed public keys could become a bigger operational risk, and exchanges or custodians may need credible migration paths to quantum-resistant standards.

Save this: the federal post-quantum deadline moved from 2035 to 2030–31.
