Last night before bed, Bitcoin was still just above $80,000. This morning, I opened my eyes and saw it just above $76,000. The Nasdaq fell 5.52% overnight, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index got hammered by 12.25%, and the VIX surged to 28. Crypto got dragged down across the board: ETH fell 8.5%, SOL dropped 6.7%, and Bitcoin was down 5.3% over 24 hours.
That kind of drop looks scary, but it boils down to one thing: the AI valuation story in U.S. stocks is losing steam, semiconductors are leading the sell-off, and crypto is just getting pulled down along with them. $80,000 was never some rock-solid floor—it was just a psychological price level. It held for a few days, then broke as soon as it was tested.
There’s another hurdle at 4 p.m.: $2.65 billion in Bitcoin options expire, with strike prices most heavily concentrated around $79,000—still a way above the current price. Tonight, October nonfarm payrolls come out at 9:30 p.m., followed by Michigan consumer sentiment at 11 p.m. Good data could offer some breathing room; bad data could mean another hit. But nonfarm payrolls can only shape tonight—they can’t determine whether this move is just a shakeout or a trend reversal.
So don’t rush to call the bottom at $76,000 today, and don’t declare a bear market after one red candle either. If you’re heavily positioned, ask yourself: if it drops to $73,000, will you still be able to sleep?
