$378M of shorts were wiped out in one hour as oil fell and ADP beat, but ETFs just lost $1.16B in three sessions. Here's what's driving it and the levels to watch.
📈 Bitcoin went from a six-week low to above $80,000 in about a day. The question is how much of that was buying, and how much was forced selling by people betting against it.
$BTC fell to about $75,600 on election night, then climbed back above $80,000 on Wednesday, touching about $81,000. Fear & Greed jumped from 34 to 50 in the process.
💥 The squeeze.
Over 24 hours, about $914 million in leveraged positions were liquidated, and $554 million of it was shorts. In a single hour, $378 million of shorts were wiped out, 81% of forced closures in that window. When a level like $80,000 breaks, traders who bet against it have to buy back, and that buying pushes price higher still.
🌍 What gave it the push.
Wall Street rallied: the Dow rose 3.03% and the S&P 500 1.58%. Oil fell sharply on hopes of easing US–Iran tensions, Treasury yields dropped, and ADP showed 86,000 private jobs against 69,000 expected. A calmer Fed outlook helped too, with December hike odds easing.
🔍 The catch: the flows.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs lost about $1.16 billion across three sessions, their biggest withdrawal since late June, with BlackRock's IBIT alone losing $405 million on one day. According to one tracker, Wednesday flipped to about $276 million in inflows, led by Fidelity. One day isn't a trend, but it's the first sign of buyers returning. Without it, 10x Research notes, a rally led by short covering can fade once the squeeze is over.
📍 The levels.
$BTC sits right on the 20-day and 50-day averages near $79,900 and $80,100. Resistance is $82,000, then $84,000 to $85,500, where Bitfinex sees holders who bought higher wanting to sell around breakeven. Support is $78,000, then $76,000.
✅ What this means for you
If you trade $BTC, a squeeze rally can reverse as fast as it came. Hold-or-lose-$80,000 is the line, so decide your size and your exit before Friday's jobs report.
If you're on the sidelines, waiting for flows and a daily close above $82,000 costs you some upside and saves you from buying the top of a squeeze.
If you hold long term, a one-day move changes little. It's a useful reminder of how crowded the short side had become.
🟢 Bullish scenario
$BTC holds $80,000, ETF inflows continue, and a clean break above $82,000 opens the $84,000 to $85,500 zone.
🔴 Risk scenario
The squeeze runs out of fuel, ETF buying fades, and $BTC drops back to $78,000 and then $76,000.
👀 Three things to watch
1️⃣ $80,000 as support, and a daily close above $82,000
2️⃣ ETF flows: does Wednesday's inflow repeat?
3️⃣ Friday's jobs report and next week's CPI on November 10
💡 The key takeaway
Part squeeze, part macro relief, and not yet proof of strong spot demand. The price recovered faster than the buyers did.
The real question isn't whether Bitcoin is back above $80,000. It's whether anyone is still buying once the shorts are gone.
That is the part worth watching.
