House Democrats are discussing cryptocurrency legislation that would expand the SEC’s oversight of trading platforms and could limit President Donald Trump’s crypto business. Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress on Tuesday, and stricter requirements could affect exchanges, customers, and the Trump family’s business starting in January. The proposal is based on Representative Maxine Waters’ 2025 Investor Protection Act, but no legislative text is available yet. According to Eleanor Terrett, Republicans have called the proposal a “messaging bill” and doubt it can become law. The bill would need 60 votes in the Senate and Trump’s signature to pass.
