I’ll explain in simple terms how to trade properly with a $1,000 budget, for example! 👇

Most beginners think leverage is a tool for quickly growing their account. So they use 20x leverage, go all in, and get liquidated at the first bit of market noise.

Leverage should be used not to increase your risk, but to free up your capital.

A professional approach is the “Smart Collateral” strategy using ISOLATED margin. It lets you control a $200 position while locking up just $10 on the exchange. How should you allocate a $1,000 deposit? Let’s break it down step by step.

🛡️ The “Smart Collateral” strategy in action

A hard-and-fast risk management rule: you should never lose more than 1–2% of your total deposit on a single trade ($10–$20 on a $1,000 deposit).

🔹 Step 1. Determine the notional position size

You plan to open a Bitcoin position with a total notional value of $200 (20% of your capital).

Important: This isn’t the amount you’re risking. It’s simply the market value of the contract you’re taking control of.

🔹 Step 2. Turn on isolated margin and 20x leverage

Instead of locking up the full $200 on the exchange, you use isolated margin and 20x leverage.

Your collateral (margin): just $10 ($200 / 20).

Available balance: $990 remains in your account. It’s completely safe, isn’t locked up in the trade, and can be used for other orders.

🔹 Step 3. Set a Stop-Loss (protection against liquidation). Essentially, liquidation is our stop-loss, but it’s better not to let the trade reach automatic liquidation by the exchange! The platform will charge you a huge fee when you’re liquidated.

The solution: We set a system Stop-Loss a little closer than the liquidation price—for example, at a $10 loss (1% of the total deposit). On the chart, with 20x leverage, this means a price move of about 4.5–4.8% against you (just before the 5% move that would trigger liquidation).

The result: If the market moves against you, the position closes at the stop-loss. You lose exactly $10. Your balance will be $990.

💡 So what’s the key benefit of this strategy?

With these numbers, you’d have to be wrong 100 times in a row to wipe out your entire deposit. In reality, even with just 40% of your trades being profitable, you can grow steadily if you maintain a good risk/reward ratio of at least 1:3.
