Stellar's proposed Bell upgrade would let a custodian serve many customers from one smart account, instead of deploying a separate contract for each.

Smart accounts use code to set spending rules, such as requiring several approvals. Bell would add deposit addresses beginning with W: each combines a contract address with a customer ID. Funds go into the shared contract, while the transfer record identifies the customer.

Stellar already has this customer-ID arrangement for ordinary accounts. Extending it to smart accounts would let providers keep their programmable spending rules without needing a contract per customer. A customer-specific address would still lead to pooled custody, not a separate personal wallet.

The mainnet upgrade vote is scheduled for November 23 at 17:00 UTC, subject to change. Activation requires validator approval; wallets and exchanges also need to support the new addresses before customers can use them there.
