I just saw that the hackers behind Binance’s $6.3 billion heist are on the move again: Lookonchain says they’re splitting up the stolen SOL, selling it for USDC, transferring it to Ethereum to buy ETH, and then swapping it for BTC through THORChain.
CoinDesk noted that once it’s converted to BTC and ETH, there’s no issuer that can freeze it. More than $3 billion in USDT/USDC has already been frozen. Elliptic’s assessment is that very little has actually been cashed out so far, and they may move the rest over the counter over the course of several months. RUNE is also up about 10%.
Honestly, I have mixed feelings: nobody can freeze BTC, and that’s one of its strengths, but it’s hard to feel good about seeing it used for money laundering. Personally, I think this is exactly when it’s even more important to keep your coins somewhere you control.
Do you think THORChain should block addresses like these? Or should decentralization mean treating everyone equally?
