⚡ Big update on the $6.3B Binance incident
Turns out it all started with a fake job interview.
An engineer was tricked into downloading a “coding assignment” that was actually malware. The attackers pretended to be recruiters.
From there they used an internal AI tool to reach two wallet engineers’ computers, stole credentials, and ran a malicious script on October 29.
They also took advantage of Ethereum’s EIP-7702 feature to control a hot wallet. Binance managed to contain it in about four hours.
Good news: $2.85 billion has been frozen and 98% of the affected tokens have already been covered by Binance’s own funds. Users won’t lose anything.
FBI is saying North Korea was behind the attack.
Stay safe out there.
