Andrew Hones, founder and CEO of Battery Finance, says Bitcoin’s long-term appreciation could help offset the United States’ $40 trillion national debt. Hones has proposed establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve and launching BitBonds, a U.S. Treasury product offering Bitcoin exposure, in hopes of lowering borrowing costs. Whether BitBonds succeeds depends on Bitcoin appreciating, and it would not directly eliminate federal debt. Hones also warned that more than $2 trillion in commercial real estate loans must be refinanced within 18 to 24 months. Battery Finance hopes to ease this pressure with loans that combine real estate collateral and Bitcoin exposure.
