By now, everyone has probably discussed the Binance hack—even Elon Musk. Around $6.3 billion in $BNB was stolen from CZ’s exchange.
According to preliminary reports, North Korean hackers infiltrated the infrastructure through a DevOps engineer’s laptop and gained access to a service container used to withdraw funds. They used the EIP-7702 mechanism to attack one of the hot Ethereum wallets.
In a single transaction, they withdrew ~167,000 ETH and 63 tokens, including 1.615 billion USDT. Tether and Circle have already frozen the stolen stablecoins.
Binance will recover quickly, although the situation itself is unpleasant. The only thing I can say is that as AI develops, there will be more incidents like this. Corporations that fail to keep their systems up to date will be especially affected, along with small fintech startups and government organizations in developing countries.
