According to a European Central Bank (ECB) press release, its president, Christine Lagarde, will leave her post early, on February 7, 2027. The ECB Governing Council thanked her for her work. Forbes previously included Lagarde among the most influential and highest-paid women in the world.
One possibility under consideration is that Lagarde will head the World Economic Forum after leaving the ECB. Her early departure gives French President Emmanuel Macron the opportunity to influence the choice of the ECB’s next president before France’s presidential election in spring 2027—after which he will no longer have the authority to take part in appointing a successor.
