Midday review: BTC ground from 77,568 to 77,226 this morning; 76,326 still holds
This morning I said, “U.S. stocks plunged, but BTC held up.” After these four hours, that needs a little qualification: it did hold, but not very convincingly.
The 08:00 candle closed at 77,568, 09:00 at 77,406, 10:00 at 77,452, and 11:00 at 77,171. Three of the four closed lower, and the 11:00 candle dipped as low as 77,136. The good news is that volume kept shrinking: the 08:00 candle saw about 36.3 million in volume, while the 12:00 candle was at about 19 million at the time of writing. A slow drift down on declining volume isn’t panic selling; it looks more like everyone is waiting for news, with nobody willing to make the first move at these levels.
$ETH is much the same: 2,249 this morning, 2,239 now. Its 24-hour high of 2,262 and low of 2,208 are both still within this morning’s range; nothing new has emerged. $BTC perpetual funding is around 0.01%, and $ETH is around -0.007%—both near zero. Open interest has barely changed, too. Nobody is getting squeezed on the futures side, so direction will have to come from spot-market news.
Altcoins saw a pullback from their highs this morning, not a reversal: all three I mentioned this morning are still above their breakout levels, but they’ve all fallen quite a bit from their highs. LSK slid from 0.2550 to 0.2207. BEAMX, which I mentioned just before noon, dipped back below 0.00488 intraday on the 12:00 candle. But that candle hasn’t closed yet, so the 13:00 close is what counts; I’m not calling a breakdown early. SOPH is more interesting: the 11:00 candle closed below 0.00200, then the 12:00 candle climbed back to 0.00217 intraday. Same thing—we wait for the close.
So this afternoon and into the European session, I’m watching just two things: first, whether Binance issues a third official update. Note that reports from various sources cite withdrawal windows of 34, 40, 42, and 48 hours, so the messaging is all over the place. There’s no point betting on the exact reopening time; just watch which coin and network reopen first, and whether it happens in stages. Second, the 13:00 close of the 12:00 candles for BEAMX and SOPH. The close matters much more than an intraday wick below support.
My take: this morning’s move isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a grind while the market waits for news. The invalidation levels are clear, too: if the 1-hour candle closes below 76,326, my comment this morning that it “held up” no longer stands; if it closes back above 77,568, then this morning’s drift lower is over. Between those two levels, I’m making no directional assumptions.
One sobering number for context: at the current price of 77,226, BTC is only about $1,780, or 2.4%, above Strategy’s average cost of 75,446. I’m not saying it will definitely get there—just pointing out that there isn’t much room below.
Risk warning: This is just my personal market commentary, not investment advice. The market can prove me wrong in either direction; you’re responsible for your own positions.
