That 16:00 candle sent $ON contracts soaring from 0.188 to 0.248 in one go—up about 39% over the past day, with roughly $68 million in trading volume. But break down the open interest by five-minute intervals and the story is completely different: during the roughly twenty minutes when price surged from 0.188 to 0.233, open interest barely budged, staying pinned around 60.6 million tokens. The real buildup came around the spike’s peak, jumping from about 60.9 million to roughly 65.9 million tokens. Price rose first, open interest followed—that’s a classic vacuum short squeeze, not the start of a long-side party.

The account breakdown is even more telling. The share of retail accounts positioned long fell from 57% to about 51%; large-account longs dropped from 52% to 46%, while the long share of large-account positions edged down from 62% to 61%. Price is rising while the share of long accounts is falling—that points to one explanation: short covering drove the price up in the first half, while the new positions in the second half included traders mistaking the spike’s peak for a top and chasing it with fresh shorts. Funding has only just lifted off the floor, from 0.005% to about 0.033%; longs are nowhere near crowded enough to turn this into a pay-to-play party. The fuel came mainly from shorts, not new longs. Earlier today, $MAGMA showed a similar pattern: open interest didn’t build during the squeeze itself, only on the pullback. This move played out faster—open interest only appeared after a twenty-minute vacuum.

The 1-hour RSI is around 79, KDJ’s J is at 94, and price has stretched well above the Keltner upper band at 0.212 and the Bollinger upper band at 0.215. The 12-period moving average is still at 0.192, and ATR is about 4.9%. The intraday high is 0.248. On a pullback, first watch whether the Keltner upper band at 0.212 can turn into support; below that is 0.188, where the rally began. If 0.212 doesn’t hold, the 5 million tokens of new positions added in the second half could take profit. If price climbs back and holds above 0.248, the newly opened shorts will have to provide another round of fuel.

I’m treating this area around 0.245 as the middle of a vacuum short squeeze, not a new base. Until open interest falls back below 62 million tokens and the share of retail accounts positioned long gets back above 55%, I’m more inclined to expect a pullback to test 0.212 than a straight move to new highs. These are my personal views.
