Suspected to be the largest hacking incident in history: CZ speaks out, authorities follow up by freezing assets, putting short-term pressure on Bitcoin

Oct. 30 — In the early hours of the morning, a large-scale abnormal outflow of on-chain assets from Binance triggered severe volatility across the market. Bitcoin's 24-hour decline widened to 3.9%, with prices quickly falling to around $76,821.

The incident also triggered large-scale liquidations of long positions across the crypto market. Total liquidations over 24 hours reached $1.510 billion, with long positions accounting for more than 80%.

According to on-chain monitoring data, as of 21:22 UTC on the 29th, addresses labeled as Binance hot wallets had transferred out assets worth approximately $5.643 billion in total. The funds were spread across multiple public blockchains, including Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Tron.

Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle intervened immediately, freezing a combined $2.316 billion in USDT and USDC. After deducting the frozen assets, the net outflow in this incident amounted to approximately $3.327 billion.

Binance shareholder CZ was the first to speak out, confirming that the incident was suspected to be a hack. He thanked the stablecoin issuers for quickly freezing the assets and said that although he was no longer responsible for Binance's day-to-day operations, as a shareholder, he expected users' funds to be fully covered.

Binance subsequently updated its official announcement, confirming that the total amount of assets verified as frozen currently stands at approximately $3 billion. The team is working with law enforcement agencies and on-chain intelligence partners to continue tracking the remaining assets. It emphasized the security of user funds and said it would continue to disclose accurate information as it is verified.

If the incident is ultimately determined to be a theft by hackers, it could become one of the largest attacks in the history of the crypto industry. The situation remains fluid, and the market should continue to follow official updates while staying alert to phishing scams and fraudulent information being spread in connection with the incident.
