Westpac: monthly limit on payments to exchanges from December
According to its official page, consulted on October 29, Australian bank Westpac may apply a cumulative limit of AUD 10,000 per calendar month from December 1, 2026, to payments it identifies as intended for exchanges.
The calculation groups the relevant accounts and payment methods for each account holder. It may include online banking, the app, and cards. For joint accounts, each account holder has their own limit.
From that date, branches will no longer accept those identified payments. There will be no exemptions or limit increases. Receiving funds from exchanges into Westpac accounts will remain unaffected by this measure.
The bank presents it as a scam-prevention measure. Its implementation depends on identifying the destination, and the channels covered may vary. This is a banking policy affecting access to funds for trading, not a change to crypto protocols.
Binance Spot context, 29/10 at 12:06 UTC: BTC was trading at 80,100 USDT (-1.347% in 24 h) and ETH at 2,321.73 USDT (-1.399%).
My take: the measure may add friction to funding for affected customers. The notice does not quantify the flows that could be restricted, nor does it allow the current fluctuations in BTC or ETH to be attributed to it.
