U.S. Core PCE and Q3 GDP data due tonight could test the Fed’s policy path and reshape market pricing logic

Oct. 29 — At 8:30 p.m. Beijing time tonight, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis will release two major economic indicators simultaneously: the September Core PCE Price Index and the advance estimate of Q3 GDP, giving markets the latest snapshot of the U.S. economy.

Notably, coming a day after the Fed’s policy decision, these data will offer a key opportunity for markets to assess the persistence of inflation and the strength of economic fundamentals.

As market investors, we should focus on whether inflationary pressures are persisting and whether economic growth momentum remains solid, to gauge the Fed’s future policy direction.

Market analysts believe that if September Core PCE comes in above expectations, signs of a rebound in inflation could fuel expectations of a December rate hike, pushing Treasury yields higher and strengthening the dollar, while weighing on gold and risk assets;

Conversely, if GDP falls well short of expectations, signs of a weakening economy could give the Fed more room to maintain a relatively accommodative policy. However, regardless of which way the data lean, they could quickly roil short-term pricing across Treasuries, the dollar, U.S. equities, and crypto markets.

In short, markets are currently being pulled between two narratives: “sticky inflation” and “economic resilience.” The combined PCE and GDP results could directly influence the Fed’s next policy move;

In other words, the results will directly affect the Fed’s future policy direction, determining whether it keeps the option of further rate hikes open to combat inflation or confirms that rates have peaked in this cycle and enters a wait-and-see phase.
