An encrypted Bitcoin wallet can still leave you locked out if your only device fails.

Encryption and backups solve different problems. Encryption helps protect access to a wallet; a backup helps restore it after loss or damage. Neither replaces the other.

Before relying on self-custody, check your wallet's official recovery instructions. Confirm what must be backed up and keep recovery material in secure locations that do not share the same failure risk.

The catch: backup methods differ. Most modern deterministic wallets can restore their addresses from a recovery phrase, while some wallets need updated backups. Online copies can also be stolen. A backup is useful only if it is complete, accessible to you, and protected from others.
