šŸ“Š Royalties are onchain; the exit is still offchain

On the morning of October 28 UTC, two products went live on Soneium, built by Sony and Startale: ipUSD, a dollar stablecoin on the chain, and IP Vault, the gateway. Depositors get exposure to the returns of a $549 million royalty portfolio managed by Partners Group, tokenized by Hong Kong-based Asseto.

The pool holds 53 investments and more than 100,000 royalty streams: The Weeknd’s back catalog, Discovery’s TV library, plus pharmaceuticals, brands, and energy transition. The official estimated annual yield is 7% to 9%.

The numbers look good. Now for a reality check.

The combined allocation for the first two rounds is $600,000, with a 100 ipUSD minimum. Retail investors can finally buy into private assets, but $600,000 in a $549 million pool is one-thousandth of the total.

The bottleneck is the exit. Deposited funds first enter a queue, with one round per month; the first settlement is November 2. If you need to leave immediately, there’s a 5% protocol fee. To save money, you can use standard redemption, but the underlying portfolio only opens a window once a quarter. When liquidity is tight, the queue can take 3 to 6 months. Valuation is based on the settlement date, not the day you click confirm.

These rules were already in place. The underlying Luxembourg fund already had a minimum investment in the tens of thousands of dollars. Its annual fee is 2%. Quarterly redemptions also come with a 5% gate. What the blockchain does is cut the minimum to $100 and move the subscription button onto a webpage. The windows haven’t changed.

One more detail worth noting: The Weeknd investment in the pool comes from a royalty-backed financing deal Partners Group made last December, alongside Lyric Capital’s $1 billion catalog transaction. Control of the works stayed with the artist. What you buy onchain is the return from that financing, two layers removed. Private credit has always been packaged this way; buyers often just don’t know which layer they’re in.

The 7% to 9% is an estimate. The portfolio launched in June 2025 and had a cumulative net return of 7.9% through this July, with a -0.1% return for July alone. The marketing quotes returns near the upper end of the historical range; there’s room for them to go lower.

On the same day, BTC at 79,7xx fell 1.6%, and ETH at 2,30x fell 2.3%—unrelated to this news. Royalties are driven by the price of money.

Onchain access can change who gets to buy. This product has done that. It can’t change when you can get out.

The smart contract says anytime. The fund agreement says quarterly.
