U.S. stock investing: Portfolio allocation needs for different investment amounts.
A. $1 million — “Young people easing into early retirement”:
Allocation: 70% VOO + 20% QQQM + 10% SGOV
Aggressive, suitable for those who plan to keep working and build wealth over the long term; not generally enough to achieve financial independence.
B. $2 million — “Middle-class semi-retirement”:
Allocation: 50% VOO + 30% QQQM + 20% SGOV
Balances growth and a buffer, but has relatively high concentration in tech stocks and may still face steep drawdowns.
C. $5 million — “Full financial freedom for the family”:
Allocation: 50% VOO + 30% BRK.B + 20% SGOV
Of the three, this is the portfolio I favor most. It offers somewhat better diversification, though VOO and BRK.B still have overlapping stock holdings, and the share of cash-like assets is not low.
