Let’s talk about today’s biggest mover in Asian trading: SK Hynix$SKHY . It surged nearly 11% in a single day, lifting the South Korean stock market by 6.6%. The KOSPI climbed back above 6,000 for the first time in 10 trading days, even triggering an upside circuit breaker. The catalyst was last night’s third-quarter earnings report: revenue topped 100 trillion won for the first time, while operating profit came in at around 83 trillion won, up 632% year over year. The market had only expected 77 trillion won, and the profit margin was close to 80%. Honestly, who would have imagined a few years ago that a memory-chip company could achieve margins like that? Even more astonishing, the company says its DRAM and HBM capacity through 2029 is essentially sold out. It has already signed long-term contracts with 14 major customers, with a standard term of five years. The upcycle in memory really is incredible.
But I think what really excited the market and sent prices straight up was SK Hynix's plan to reward shareholders. The company plans to return around 100 trillion won to shareholders in total this year, including over 30 trillion won in cash dividends and over 60 trillion won in share buybacks and cancellations. The 40 trillion won buyback that began in August was just completed last week, and 23.69 million shares will be canceled outright on November 5. The board has now approved another 20 trillion won in buybacks, plus 14 trillion won in dividends. Crypto projects with real revenue that put real money into buybacks tend to perform well price-wise—I'm sure you get the idea. SK Hynix is making money and then shrinking its share capital, so each shareholder naturally ends up with a larger stake. Tokens like HYPE and BNB that can sustain buybacks and burns over the long term had real revenue to begin with. When evaluating a project, don't just look at whether it talks about buybacks—look at where the money for them comes from.
Over in crypto, the big news that's been making waves lately is Predict's announcement that its TGE is coming soon. Tomorrow, PREDICT will hold its TGE presale in Binance Wallet, from 4 to 6 p.m. Beijing time on October 29. You need Alpha points to participate, so if you've been farming Alpha, keep an eye on it. The total supply is 1 billion tokens, with 16% unlocked at TGE. The team's and investors' allocations will be locked for 24 months. The first-season airdrop is 70 million tokens: you can claim 35% right away, or stake for a year to get the full amount. If you want the tokens credited on the day of listing, you need to submit by 5 p.m. tomorrow. PREDICT was already listed on Binance's pre-market futures a few days ago, and with the Fortune Teller event offering a 1 million prize pool, Binance's push into prediction markets is very clear.
Of course, prediction markets aren't without concerns. The US CFTC has just started investigating Polymarket again, looking into whether it is truly blocking US users. The regulatory pressure is still there. For now, Predict is still relatively small compared with Polymarket, with fewer than 5% as many users. Its market cap is already pretty impressive. The project team saw that market conditions have been good lately and rushed to launch its TGE—standard practice in crypto, but in my view, a bit shortsighted. In any case, the people and teams who have been farming points with Predict should be in for a nice payday.
