🔍 One million barrels of oil, and a “greatest oil victory in history”
Tuesday, Corpus Christi, Texas. Trump pointed to a ship in the harbor and said it was carrying one million barrels of crude oil from Venezuela. When speaking to reporters, he called the shipment a “gift”; at a rally, he called it the “greatest oil victory in history,” and casually referred to Venezuela as America’s 51st state.
The White House hasn’t clarified under what terms the oil was shipped. The reporting puts it plainly: the details cannot be verified.
What can be verified is the accounting. In the August deal, the Pentagon received a 35% stake in North America Blue Energy Partners, a company that manages 65 billion barrels in proven reserves. In September, the White House said the first shipment wouldn’t enter the U.S. reserve until November, and experts already doubted it could make a difference in the short term. Now it’s arrived early, at the end of October, with just seven days until the November 3 vote. The numbers still haven’t been tallied.
Gasoline didn’t wait for it. The national average, according to AAA, is $4.29 a gallon. This year has seen more days above $4 than any year on record. In Texas’s Senate race, Paxton versus Talarico, the average polling gap is 1.7 points. Neither outcome would be a surprise.
Something even more concrete happened the same day. A U.S. appeals court ruled that bonds issued by Venezuela’s state oil company, due in 2020, are valid. Behind the case is the fight over Citgo. The court says the paper is valid; sanctions say it can’t be touched. One asset. Two statuses. Two sets of books.
The ledger on-chain works the same way. This week, the Treasury is still talking about tracking and freezing crypto funds linked to Iran. Since the start of the year, Tether has frozen about $550 million in Iran-linked USDT. A Senate report from September spells it out: of the 846 wallets named, 84% settled exclusively or almost exclusively in USDT.
The switch is in Washington’s hands. Who it turns it on for and who it shuts off has nothing to do with the balance on-chain.
As I write this, BTC is quoted between $80,785 and $80,933 across six sources, up 1% to 1.5% in 24 hours, and still 36% below its October 6 high of $126,199 last year. It hasn’t participated at all in this round of oil repricing. What it trades in has always been liquidity, not sovereignty.
