Looking back over the year, one conclusion is quite a reality check.
The broader market is still below last October’s peak
The median top 200 asset is down 58%
DeFi is down 27%, and gaming is down 74%
Only one sector has climbed back above last October’s peak
Privacy coins, up 213% 🤔
The privacy sector’s total market cap has grown from $7.1 billion a year ago to $33.6 billion today
Nearly half of that gain came in the last 30 days
This is no longer just a niche crowd patting itself on the back
The biggest driver is, of course, $ZEC
In a year, it jumped from 82nd to 10th by market cap
It’s up over 2,200%, accounting for 62% of the entire privacy sector’s market cap
And today it’s still hovering around $1,200
But here’s the interesting part: take ZEC out of the picture
The rest of the privacy coin basket is still up 85% over the past year
It’s also up 56% since Bitcoin’s peak last October
$XMR doubling in a year is one example
That suggests it’s not just one coin carrying the show—the whole narrative is recovering
Last week, ZEC’s ETF also saw $41.09 million in net inflows
Ending three consecutive weeks of outflows
But don’t get carried away just yet
ZEC is actually down more than 15% this month
It touched a high near $1,699 in late September
ETF money tends to chase rallies and sell off in downturns—it can come and go quickly
Here’s how I see it
When people’s concerns shift from price volatility to information security
The privacy narrative commands a premium
The more transparent the blockchain, the more people are willing to pay for opacity
That logic feels entirely plausible this year
But a premium is one thing, volatility another
The $1,200 level isn’t an unbreakable floor
If inflows dry up, a pullback toward $1,000 wouldn’t be surprising
The narrative may have long-term potential, but position sizing still needs to account for volatility
What do you think of this move in privacy coins?
Is real demand coming back, or is this just another narrative rotation?
Not investment advice. DYOR. Trading involves risk.
