$SHELL | Why do market capitalization figures differ across platforms?

A research report notes that recent market capitalization estimates for $SHELL range from approximately $6 million to $10.4 million. The report also mentions significant differences in circulating supply: some sources report around 270 million tokens, while others give a figure close to 458 million.

This discrepancy matters because market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the current token price by the circulating supply used by the platform.

If two platforms use different circulating supply figures, their market capitalizations may differ even when the displayed token prices are nearly identical. This does not automatically mean that one platform has calculated incorrectly, but it does highlight the need to check the methodology and input data.

Three concepts are especially important.

Circulating market capitalization uses the platform’s estimate of how many tokens are currently circulating in the market.

FDV, short for Fully Diluted Valuation, generally uses the total supply or maximum supply, according to each platform’s methodology.

Total supply is the number of tokens that have been created, but how locked, burned, or otherwise restricted tokens are treated can vary between data sources.

These three metrics answer different questions. Circulating market capitalization estimates the value of the tokens currently in circulation at the current price, while FDV shows a valuation based on a broader supply assumption. None of these metrics alone proves that a token is underpriced or overpriced.
