Robinhood reports Tuesday: Prediction markets are already more profitable than crypto—can crypto revenue meet expectations?
According to CNBC, Robinhood will report its Q3 earnings after the market closes on 10/27 ET (early morning on 10/28 Beijing time). The earnings call is at 17:00 ET, coinciding with the first day of the FOMC meeting.
Zacks consensus estimates: EPS of $0.55 and revenue of about $1.42 billion (up approximately 11% year over year). Q2 event-contract revenue was $156 million, already exceeding crypto trading revenue of $100 million (down 38% year over year).
Based on crypto trading volume on the Robinhood app, Basecamp estimates Q3 crypto revenue at about $115 million, below the market estimate of $135.6 million. Event contracts saw about 15.2 billion trades from July through September 24, exceeding the 13.6 billion for all of Q2.
Bespoke data show that HOOD shares fell the day after each of the past six earnings reports, by an average of about 2.2%. TradingKey notes that the stock is testing trendline support at $95.11.

This earnings report is essentially a temperature check on retail crypto enthusiasm. BTC rose more than 40% in Q3, but crypto trading volume on the Robinhood app barely increased. This suggests retail investors prefer short-term prediction contracts (BTC price moves over 15 minutes, Fed rate decisions) over buying crypto directly. Prediction markets are taking traffic from crypto spot trading.
【Opportunities/Risks】
1. If crypto revenue comes in near $115 million rather than $135.6 million, that could signal weak retail spot demand, which would be unfavorable for short-term sentiment toward altcoins.
2. If event-contract revenue significantly exceeds $156 million, the prediction-market sector (including similar products from exchanges) could attract even more attention. However, regulatory risks remain, including the Nevada lawsuit and the suspension of sports contracts in Michigan.
3. Technically, a break below $95.11 could put $85.30 in view; a move above $103.32 would be needed to signal a recovery (TradingKey).
4. The same week also brings the FOMC meeting and earnings reports from Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, potentially compounding volatility.
Do you think retail investors are shifting from “buying crypto” to “betting on price moves”? Is that good or bad for spot markets?
