📈 Using tokenized U.S. stocks as collateral to borrow U? Before jumping on the Robinhood Chain lending hype, understand your liquidation level

One thing that’s been all over X these past couple of days: Robinhood’s stock tokens can now be used as collateral on Morpho. Holders can borrow the USDG stablecoin without selling their positions. Robinhood Chain handles the tokenization, while Morpho runs isolated lending markets. Some posts say NVDA and SPCX are already available in the early markets.

Money is definitely flowing in:
🔹 On October 20, one user estimated that deposits in Morpho markets on Robinhood Chain were around $1.08 billion, with about $477 million in outstanding loans
🔹 Another user compared the figures and found that, excluding USDC used as perpetuals margin, Robinhood Chain had about $1.14 billion in DeFi assets—already more than Hyperliquid’s roughly $1.03 billion—with lending driving most of the growth

It sounds great: keep your stocks, avoid selling, and still get U to use elsewhere. But I’d rather talk about the risks:

1️⃣ Stocks have market hours; blockchains don’t. U.S. markets are closed at night and on weekends, but loans keep accruing interest. You need to understand how price feeds work and how liquidations handle gaps when the market opens.
2️⃣ Individual stocks can be highly volatile. Using a single stock as collateral means one earnings-related gap could send you straight to the liquidation threshold. It feels very different from using BTC as collateral.
3️⃣ If you use the borrowed U to buy more stock tokens, you’re stacking leverage. It feels great when prices rise, but a drop can trigger a chain of liquidations.
4️⃣ Whether a stock token is merely a receipt or represents equity, whether it can be redeemed, and who issues it—all of these are separate risks from the lending protocol and should be assessed separately.

My take: being able to use stocks as on-chain collateral to borrow against is a genuinely useful step for tokenization, and more meaningful than simply being able to trade them. But for individuals, the safest approach is to borrow conservatively and leave plenty of room for volatility. Don’t treat it as free leverage.

Would you use your own U.S. stock tokens as collateral to borrow U? What loan-to-value ratio would let you sleep at night?
