Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, warned followers to be careful when accessing websites over the next few days after two critical vulnerabilities were disclosed in PHP, a language used by platforms such as WordPress and Magento.
The warning gained traction because a significant portion of the crypto industry relies on this technology.
According to the company SlowMist, 793 domains linked to the crypto market use PHP in some part of their infrastructure. These include wallet providers and DeFi protocols, raising concerns about potential attacks on websites that have not yet been patched.
On X, Zhao wrote: "Call me paranoid, but be extra careful when visiting ANY website over the next few days." He noted that administrators do not always keep security patches up to date, and that compromised websites could be used to steal credentials or exploit devices.
The Bitcointalk forum, created by Satoshi Nakamoto, was offline for much of the day while undergoing security checks. In a statement, administrator theymos said that attacks had been attempted but blocked, and recommended that users change their passwords.
Projects such as PancakeSwap also issued statements to dispel concerns about any direct impact. The platform said: "PancakeSwap does not use PHP anywhere in its technology infrastructure, and our platform was not affected.
Your funds are safe." Zhao also urged more teams to issue similar statements to inform users.
