Tesla: higher digital asset value, same BTC balance at quarter-end
Tesla published its third-quarter 2026 results on October 21. The balance sheet is as of September 30: it reported USD 962 million in digital assets, compared with USD 674 million as of June 30. That is an increase of USD 288 million, or 42.7% in book value.
The detail that changes how to read this is in the 10-Q filings: Tesla reported 11.509 BTC at both quarter-ends. Bitcoin makes up most of this category, but the entire amount should not automatically be attributed to it. An unchanged ending balance also does not rule out offsetting transactions during the quarter.
The report also records an unrealized quarterly gain of USD 288 million on digital assets. This is not cash received from selling them, and it could be reversed by changes in valuation. These figures describe September, not current holdings or value.
Market context: on 22/10 at 14:34 UTC, Binance showed BTC at 81.687,55 USDT (-2,90% over 24 hours) and TSLAB at 388,06 USDT (+0,64%). TSLAB offers tokenized exposure to Tesla; it is not equivalent to directly owning its shares, and its price may differ.
My take: the increase in book value, by itself, does not demonstrate new purchases or predict the direction of BTC. It is worth distinguishing units, valuation, and cash before interpreting the headline.
